Usha Mangeshkar a.k.a Usha ji was born on 27th January 1935 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. She is a famous Indian Playback Singer who has sung in many Indian languages like Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Bhojpuri, Bengali, Kannada and Nepali.
Usha ji Born to Pandit Deena Nath Mangeshkar, who was a well-known Marathi theatre actor and renowned Natiya Sangeet Musician and Hindustani classical Vocalist.
Usha ji belongs to a talent powerhouse family. Her elder sisters Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle are among the most celebrated Singers in the country. She is the youngest sister and elder to her music-director brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar.
Usha, the singer, came into limelight after her devotional song from the movie “Jai Santoshi Maa” became an all-time blockbuster in 1975. She sang “Mai Toh Arti” for the same film and won many nominations and accolades for it.
Usha Mangeshkar was awarded BFJA Award for the songs in the movie “Jai Santoshi Maa” as Best Female Playback Singer. She even sang the same song for the movie’s remake in 2006.
She is a multi-talented personality. She has a deep interest in painting. She has even produced a hugely successful musical drama for Doordarshan Channel named “Phoolwanti”. This supremely melodious Singer found fame with her famous song “Mungla” Along with her other songs for the Marathi movie “Pinjarra”.
Her efficiency as a singer is that her voice had a quality which could be moulded to suit just anyone. She learnt music from renowned musicians like Ustad Amanat Ali Khan and Ustad Aman Ali Khan. Along with Lata Mangeshkar she also attended concerts by Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan and Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.
She was attracted to classical music in a natural way. It is a lesser known fact that Usha Mangeshkar also studied classical dance before she took to professional singing.
She has been influenced deeply by her elder sister’s style but her style of singing is totally different from her sister’s. Bhabhi aayi badi dhoom dham se from Subah Ka Tara (1953) tuned by C Ramchandra the leading composer of that era was rendered by Usha Mangeshkar.
The song was instant hit. Her voice suited youngsters and that made her a kind of children’s song specialist. At the same time she was getting more songs in Marathi films which she accepted with readiness, becoming the most sought after singer in Marathi films. As a young girl, she was more interested in studies and painting and never took singing as a career seriously. As an artist, she paints portraits in oils and acrylics. A trained artist, her works have been exhibited in Mumbai.
