Mohammed Rafi Career:
Mohammed Rafi, whose nickname was Pheeko, began singing by imitating the chants of a fakir in the streets of his native village Kotla Sultan Singh where his family lived. Rafi’s father moved to Lahore in 1935, where he ran a men’s salon in Noor Mohalla in Bhati Gate.
Mohammed Rafi learnt classical music from Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan, Pandit Jiwan Lal Mattoo and Firoze Nizami. His first public performance came at the age of 13, when he sang in Lahore featuring K. L. Saigal.
In 1941, Rafi, under Shyam Sundar, made his debut in Lahore as a playback singer in the duet “Soniye Nee, Heeriye Nee” with Zeenat Begum in the Punjabi film Gul Baloch (released in 1944) under music director Shyam Sunder. In that same year, Rafi was invited by All India Radio Lahore to sing for them.
Mohammed Rafi’s debut film was ‘’Gaon Ki Chori”
Between 1950 and 1970, Rafi was the most sought after singer in the Hindi film industry. Rafi is primarily noted for his songs in Hindi, over which he had a strong command. He sang around 7,405 songs in many languages.
Mohammed Rafi sang in other Indian languages including Konkani, Bhojpuri, Odia, Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi, Sindhi, Kannada, Gujarati, Telugu, Magahi, Maithili and Urdu. Apart from Indian languages, he also sang songs in English, Farsi, Arabic, Sinhalese, Creole and Dutch.
Life in Bombay (present day – Mumbai)
In 1944, Mohammed Rafi moved to Mumbai. He and Hameed Sahab rented a ten-by-ten-feet room in the crowded downtown Bhendi Bazar area.
Poet Tanvir Naqvi introduced him to film producers including Abdur Rashid Kardar, Mehboob Khan and actor-director Nazeer.
Shyam Sunder was in Mumbai and provided the opportunity to Rafi to sing a duet with G. M. Durrani, “Aji dil ho kaabu mein to dildar ki aisi taisi”
For ‘’Gaon Ki Gori’’, which became Rafi’s first recorded song in a Hindi film. Other songs followed. Rafi’s first song with Naushad was “Hindustan Ke Hum Hain” with Shyam Kumar, Alauddin and others, from A. R. Kardar’s Pehle Aap (1944).
Around the same time, Rafi recorded another song for the 1945 film Gaon Ki Gori, “Aji Dil Ho Kaaboo Mein”. He considered this song to be his first Hindi language song. Rafi appeared in two movies. In 1945, he appeared on the screen for the song “Tera Jalwa Jis Ne Dekha” in the film Laila Majnu.
Mohammed Rafi sang a number of songs for Naushad as part of the chorus, including “Mere Sapnon Ki Rani, Roohi Roohi” with K. L. Saigal, from the film Shahjahan (1946).

In 1949, Rafi was given solo songs by music directors such as Naushad (Chandni Raat, Dillagi and Dulari) Shyam Sunder (Bazaar) and Husnalal Bhagatram (Meena Bazaar). Besides K. L. Saigal, whom he considered his idol, Rafi was also influenced by G. M. Durrani. In the early phase of his career, he often followed Durrani’s style of singing, but later evolved his own, unique style.
He sang with Durrani in some of the songs such as “Humko Hanste Dekh Zamana Jalta Hai” and “Khabar Kisi Ko Nahiin, Woh Kidhar Dekhte” (Beqasoor, 1950). Geeta Dutt born on November 23, 1930, was one of the 10 children born to a wealthy Zamindar family in the village Idilpur presently Shariatpur District, Bangladesh. Was a prominent Indian playback singer and a famous Hindi and Bengali classical artist. She found particular prominence as a playback singer in Hindi cinema. She also sang many modern Bengali songs, both in the film and non-film genres.
K. Hanuman Prasad took Geeta under his patronage, trained and groomed her in singing, and later launched her into singing for movies. In 1946, she got the first break with an opportunity to sing in the mythological film Bhakta Prahlad for which Prasad was the music director. She was given two lines to sing for two songs. She was sixteen at that time.
She Married Actor-Director Guru Dutt in 1953.
And had 3 children Tarun Dutt, Geeta Dutt, and Arun Dutt.
Story of Guru and Geeta Dutt:
The famous playback singer Geeta Roy was recording the song ‘Tadbeer Se Bigdi Huyi Taqdeer,‘ in the presence of the director of the movie, Guru Dutt, and the Music Director, SD Burman among others. Though her singing left every listener beseeching for more, Guru, in particular, was flabbergasted by how the singer, almost intuitively, Occidentalized a ghazal into a jazzy seductive song!
Amongst those enamored by her singing was Guru Dutt’s mother. Soon, Geeta Roy became a regular visitor of the Dutt. Though a huge star-singer with an awesome fan following, Geeta molded herself as part of Guru Dutt’s household as though she was born in it.
Even today everyone beguilingly recalls sweet temperament, her lack of artificiality, affection, and her complete candor. She would simply take down the harmonium from their shelf and sing Bengali songs.
It was only a matter of time before Guru Dutt fell head over heels in love with his regular visitor. They were married on May 26, 1953. Thus were born some of the most achingly romantic songs of the 50’s- those nuggets of love and its various facets which materialized because there was love in the air.
Guru Dutt and Geeta Dutt formed a perfect team. He knew exactly how to use her voice and he used it in ways so that her inane generosity of spirit spilled over on the soundtrack in stunning romantic declarations.
Geeta dutt famous songs: ‘Hoon Abhi main jawan’, ‘Jaa Jaa Jaa bewafa’, ‘Babu Ji Dheere chalna’ and ‘Yeh lo main haari piya’ in Aar Paar (1954) were like aprolonged outburst of harmonious sensations. Even today Geeta Dutt explodes on the streamlined soundtrack with a velvety velocity.
After getting married to Guru Durr on May 26, 1953. Thus were born some of the most achingly romantic songs of the 50’s- those nuggets of love and its various facets which materialized because there was love in the air.
Guru Dutt and Geeta Dutt formed a perfect team. He knew exactly how to use her voice and he used it in ways, so that her inane generosity of spirit spilled over on the soundtrack in stunning romantic declarations.
Aar Paar (1954) were like prolonged outburst of harmonious sensations. Even today Geeta Dutt explodes on the streamlined soundtrack with a velvety velocity.
The mood of saucy romance the pervades the films Aar Paar (1954) or Mr. and Mrs. 55 (1955) owe as much to Geeta Dutt’s vibrant vocals which seize the soundtrack in ceaseless spells of splendor and sublimity, as their popularity to the legendary status that Guru Dutt’s cinema enjoyed, giving her songs far more air-space than other, possibly more deserving prospects which got eclipsed by them.
R.D. Burman heard Geeta ji’s voice and immediately decided to have her sing in Do Bhai.
Geeta ji had this unconventional way of singing. The time was when most singing styles had origins of ghazals. Geeta ji who had this innate talent, with no formal training in the singing of the type of songs that were in vogue at that time, introduced her own brand of the appealingly fresh and free-flowing style of singing.
Her singing was based on instincts and spontaneity, guts and feelings, and love and pensiveness that resulted in breathing life and emotion into each song she sang. Geeta Dutt’s singing life was largely influenced by her personal life. During the romance and early years of her marriage she sang some of her best songs for pictures involved with Guru Dutt in one capacity or another.
Some of the most beautiful romantic songs Geeta ji sang were during these days and they were spilled and richly splashed with her youthfully exuberant voice.
After her debut in Hindi film music in the year 1946, Geeta started gaining popularity in a short period of time. The very next year she became the most sensational voice with the success of songs from Do Bhai (1947). This led the composers from the Gujrati film industry to approach her for singing in Gujarati films.
Avinash Vyas was one of the most prolific and talented composers of Gujrati film music. He was already working with Geeta Dutt for his Hindi films and thus Geeta became a natural choice for singing in his Gujrati film songs right from the year 1948.
A detailed discussion on her work in Gujarati films. Almost simultaneously, she was pulled in for Karyavar, with music by Ajit Merchant.
Vyas’ Nanand Bhojai and Vaarasdar
Even though for living 30 years in Bombay (Mumbai) Geeta Ji might not have a perfect accent, maybe that is the reason she did not receive much chance to sing Marathi songs in her career.
When she got all of those chances to sing the songs with great ease of rendition and a rare depth of feeling – both hallmarks of her singing in any case.
The Voice of the Nation Kishore Kumar was born on August 4th 1929. Kishore Kumar was born in a Bengali Brahmin Ganguly family in Khandwa, Central Provinces (now in Madhya Pradesh) as Abhas Kumar Ganguly. His father, Kunjalal Ganguly (Gangopadhyay) was a lawyer and his mother, Gouri Devi came from a wealthy Bengali family and was a home-maker.
Kunjalal Gangopadhyaya was invited by the Kamavisadar Gokhale family of Khandwa to be their personal lawyer. Kishore was the youngest of four siblings, the older three being Ashok (the eldest), Sati Devi, and Anoop.
Kishore Kumar got married 4 times in his entire lifetime. The very first time he got married was when he in his 30s and he was married to Ruma Guha Thakurta and their marriage lasted for only 8 years.
Kishore Da’s 2nd wife was the most beautiful actress Bollywood had ever seen was Madhubala (Mumtaz Jahaan Begum Dehlavi) who had worked with him in many films including his home production Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958) and Jhumroo (1961).
When Kumar proposed to her, Madhubala was ill and was planning to go to London for treatment.
She had a ventricular septal defect (hole in the heart), and he was still married to Ruma. After his divorce, the couple had a civil wedding in 1960 and Kumar converted to Islam and reportedly changed his name to Karim Abdul.
His parents refused to attend the ceremony. The couple also had a Hindu ceremony to please Kumar’s parents, but Madhubala was never truly accepted as his wife. Within a month of their wedding, she moved back to her bungalow in Bandra because of tension in the Kumar household.
They remained married, but under great strain for the remainder of Madhubala’s life. Their marriage ended with Madhubala’s death on 23 February 1969.
Kishore Kumar’s 3rd wife was Yogeeta Bali and lasted from 1976 to 4 August 1978. Kishore was married to Leena Chandavarkar from 1980 until his death. He had two sons, Amit Kumar with Ruma, and Sumit Kumar with Leena Chandavarkar.
Kishore Kumar’s elder brother was a star already settled in the Bollywood cinema world he had already been working in the film industry.
Later in the years Abhas Kumar changed his name to Kishore Kumar to launch himself in the industry as a chorus singer.
Kumar’s first film appearance was in Shikari (1946), in which his brother, Ashok played the lead role. Music director Khemchand Prakash gave Kumar a chance to sing “Marne Ki Duayen Kyon Mangu” for the film Ziddi (1948).
After this, Kishore Kumar was offered many other assignments, but he was not very serious about a film career. In 1949, he settled in Bombay. Kumar played the lead in the Bombay Talkies film Andolan (1951), directed by Phani Majumdar.
Although he got some acting assignments with the help of his brother, he was more interested in becoming a singer. But Ashok wanted Kumar to be an actor like him.
Between 1946 and 1955, Kumar appeared in 22 films of which 16 were flops and since he was disinterested in taking up acting as a career, he would find ways to be in the bad books of the director or producer, so that they throw him from their films.
It was only after the success of films such as Ladki, Naukari, Miss Malaysia, Char Paise and Baap Re Baap that Kumar developed an interest in acting seriously, which resulted in him having successful films as the lead actor between 1955 and 1966.
At the time of his acting career he was deeply influenced and inspired by the K.L Saigai and he tried to intimate his style of singing in some of his early films he had a respect from Rabindranath Tagore.
Kumar employed yodeling in many of his songs including; Tum bin jaaon kahan, Zindagi ek safar hai suhana, and Chala jata hoon. The style eventually became an essential feature of his singing and was inspired by Jimmie Rodgers and Tex Morton.
Kishore Kumar acted in Bimal Roy’s Naukari (1954) and Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s directorial debut Musafir (1957). Salil Chowdhury, the music director for Naukari, was initially dismissive of Kumar as a singer when he found that Kumar had no formal training in music.
However, after hearing his voice, Chowdhury gave him the song Chhota Sa Ghar Hoga, which was supposed to be sung by Hemant Kumar. Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958), his home production, had the three Ganguly brothers and Madhubala in main roles.
Kumar played a car mechanic who has a romance with a city girl (Madhubala) with a subplot involving the brothers. In the movie Half Ticket, for one of the songs – “Aake Seedhi Lagi Dil Pe” – the music director Salil Chowdhary had a duet in mind and wanted Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar to sing the song.
However, since Lata Mangeshkar was not in town and Salil Chowdhury had to record that song before she could return, Kumar solved the problem by singing both the male and female parts of the song himself.
The duet is actually for Pran and Kishore Kumar on the screen dressed as a woman. It just turned out to be fine as he did admirably well singing both in male and female voices.
As a Director
Kishore Kumar had also produced many movies in his and also directed some of the movies in the late 1970s and early 1980s Pyar Zindagi Hai, Badhti Ka Naam Dadhi (1978), Sabaash Daddy, Zindagi (1981), Door Wadiyon Mein Kahin (1980) and Chalti Ka Naam Zindagi (1982) which was his last appearance as an actor. Kishore Kumar’s son Amit Kumar became a Bollywood singer in the 1974 with the song “Apne Bas Ki Baat Nahi“, composed by Kumar for the film Badthi Ka Naam Daadi.
Amit Kumar became popular with success of the song “Bade Achche Lagte Hai“.
Kishore continued singing for several actors even in 1980s. Kishore Kumar performed stage shows right from 1969 to earn money to pay his income tax arrears.
Kumar stopped singing for Amitabh Bachchan in the year 1981, after Bachchan refused to appear as a guest in the film Mamta Ki Chhaon Mein, which Kishore Kumar produced.
Kishore declined to give voice for Amitabh in Naseeb, Coolie, Mard and Desh Premee. Kishore said he would give his voice to Randhir Kapoor in the film Pukar. Since Kishore shared good rapport with R. D. Burman, he agreed to sing in Mahaan, Shakti and Bemisal.
Later, Kishore called a truce by singing for Amitabh in a solo song in Shahenshah and later in Toofan. Kishore sang the song “Mera Geet Adhura Hai” for his production Mamta Ki Chaon Mein and pictured the song on Rajesh Khanna.

Arijit Singh was born in West Bengal to a Punjabi father and a Bengali mother. He hails from a family of musicians with his maternal grandmother being a singer, maternal aunt being trained in Indian classical music, maternal uncle playing the tabla, and his mother being a singer and a tabla player, imparting music to this artist since his childhood.
He studied at Raja Bijay Singh High School and Sripat Singh College. He learnt Indian classical music from Rajendra Prasad Hazari and trained in playing the tabla under Dhirendra Prasad Hazari. He trained for Rabindra Sangeet and pop music under Birendra Prasad Hazari.
Arijit Singh first married one of his co-contestants Koyal Singh from a reality show, but got divorced. The singer then married his childhood friend Koel Roy in Tarapith temple, West Bengal in 2014. Koel was also previously married and has a daughter from her first wedding.
Arijit Singh’s musical career began when his guru Rajendra Prasad Hazari, who felt that “Indian classical music was a dying tradition“, insisted he leave his hometown and participate in the reality show Fame Gurukul (2005) at the age of 18. Arijit Singh was eliminated by audience polling, finishing in sixth place.
During the show, filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali recognized his talent and had him sing “Yun Shabnami” a song scheduled to be used in his upcoming film Saawariya. During production, the script changed and the song was no longer required. It was never released. After the Fame Gurukul, Kumar Taurani, the head of Tips, signed him for an album which was never released.
Arijit Singh participated in another reality show 10 Ke 10 Le Gaye Dil and won. He chose to move to Mumbai in 2006 to freelance, staying in a rented room in the Lokhandwala area of the city. He invested the prize money of ₹1 million from 10 ke 10 LeGaye Dil to build his recording studio. He became a music producer and began composing music and singing pieces for advertisements, news channels and radio stations.
Arijit Singh spent a part of his early musical career as a music programmer and music producer for music directors such as Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Vishal-Shekhar, Mithoon, Monty Sharma and Pritam. While working with other composers he supervised the vocals, and the chorus sections, but it was while working with Pritam, that he began to produce and program music by himself.
Arijit Singh started working with Pritam on three films—Golmaal 3, Crook and Action Replayy. He started with singing scratches in the Telugu Film Industry with the 2010 film Kedi with the song “Neeve Na Neeve Na” composed by Sandeep Chowta.
Arijit Singh made his Bollywood musical debut with the Mithoon composition, “Phir Mohabbat” from Murder 2, which though he recorded it in 2009 was released in 2011.
The same year, when he was programming for the song “Raabta” from Agent Vinod (2012)
Pritam asked him to sing as well. The part was retained in all four versions of the song, and he was made to sing the entire composition in one of the versions. Apart from Agent Vinod, Arijit Singh dubbed for Pritam in three, other films released during the year: Players, Cocktail and, Barfi! He also sang for Chirantan Bhatt in 1920: Evil Returns for the song Uska Hi Banana.
Glamsham in its review of the song “Uska Hi Banana” wrote that Arijit had sung the song intensely, emotionally and passionately and at a very high pitch.
Arijit Singh sang on Vishal–Shekhar’s composition “Duaa” in the film Shanghai.
It won Arijit Singh the Mirchi Music Award for Upcoming Male Playback Singer award. He was nominated in the same category for Phir Le Aya Dil from Barfi!
Arijit Singh breakthrough came in Aashiqui 2 where he was a lead and key vocalist and came to prominence with the release of the song “Tum Hi Ho” from the movie.
The song won him several awards and nominations including Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer. Arijit continued to work with Pritam, singing

Though he has been inspired by many artists, Singh named KK as his favorite singer along with Ayushmann Khurrana. He named Pritam Chakraborty, Vishal–Shekhar, Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, Amit Trivedi, Mithoon and A. R. Rahman as his favorite music directors. Singh has idolized Ghulam Ali, Jagjit Singh and Mehdi Hassan.
In an interview with Filmbeat in April 2013, he declared that he is the biggest fan of singer Krishnakumar Kunnath (KK). His desire to sing for Aamir Khan came to reality in 2016 with the song “Naina” from Dangal. In 2016 he appeared on the popular chat and comedy show The Kapil Sharma Show aired on Sony TV India. The show’s host Kapil Sharma explained the difficulties he had bringing Singh on the show due to his shy nature.
Singh has often been portrayed by the Indian media as a “small-town boy who made it big”. He had also been trolled on social media to which he replied “I use my social media sparingly for things that are close to my heart. I don’t read the comments. My team filters out the comments for me, I don’t involve myself a lot into paying attention to criticism on social media. I speak what I want to speak and my team lets me know the needful.
