Wishing Runa Laila A Wonderful 67th Happy Birthday

Runa Laila

Runa Laila is a Bangladeshi Playback Singer was born on 17th November 1952. She completed her graduation from the University of Dhaka. She is well known and one of the best known singers in Asia. She was born in Sylhet a city in East Pakistan – now Bangladesh. She was born to Syed Mohammed Imdad Ali a civil person servant posted in Karachi and Amila Laila. She started taking dance lessons of Kathak and Bharatnatyam genre.

Family

Runa Laila’s Father Syed Mohammed Imdad All was a Civil servant posted in Karachi and mother is Amina Laila.
She is married to Bangladesh’s popular film actor and a host Alamgir who has won several National film awards.

They have a daughter named Tani Laila who is a singer too.

Career

Runa Laila began career journey with a stage show in Dhaka at an age of 6 where she got the chance because of her elder sister Dian’s inability to sing. Certainly, she did not miss the chance, she satisfied with all audience by singing. When she was 9 years old, Radio Pakistan organized an inter-school music competition but organizers did not want to give her chance, cause of being an English medium student. In Pakistan those days, Ahmed Rushdi was the leading film singer who introduced rock n roll, disco and other modern genres to South Asian music. Following Rushdi’s success, Christian bands specialising in jazz started performing at various night clubs and hotel lobbies

in Karachi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Dhaka and Lahore. Laila became a fan of singer Ahmed Rushdi whom she considered her guru (teacher), and tried to emulate not only his singing style but also the way he used to perform on the stage. She then learned classical music with her elder sister Dina Laila (d. 1976). While she was a student of Saint Lawrence Convent, she won an inter-school singing competition in Karachi in the then west Pakistan.

She, along with her sister, were trained by Ustad Abdul Kader Peyarang and Ustad Habibuddin Ahmed. Runa wholeheartedly dedicated herself for the betterment of Bangla songs and the Bangla music industry. By then she had given voice to a significant number of Urdu songs, but all that fame seemed like nothing when the call from her roots reverberated within.

Her cousin, Anjumara Begum, had already been a known singer. When Laila was 12, she performed as a playback singer for a male child actor in the Urdu language film Jugnu. The song was titled “Gudia Si Munni Meri”.

In 1966, Laila made her entry and breakthrough in Pakistani Film industry with the song “Unki Nazron Sey Mohabbat Ka Jo Paigham Mila” for the film Hum Dono.

After her popularity she started performing on PTV channel’s show called ‘’Bazm E Laila’’.

Laila started appearing on the ‘Zia Mohyuddin Show’ (1972–74) and later did songs for films in the 1970s such as the film Umrao Jan Ada (1972). In 1974, she recorded “Shaader Lau” in Kolkata. She also had her first concert in India in 1974 in Mumbai.

Bollywood Career

She started in Bollywood with director Jaidev who she meet in Delhi, who took her under his wings and got her the chance to play at the inauguration of Doordarshan.

She first worked with the music composers Kalyanji-Anandji for the title song of a movie called Ek Se Badhkar Ek.

Lata Mangeshkar gave her blessings to Laila during the recording of the song. She gained popularity in India with the songs O Mera babu Chail chabila and Damadum Mast Kalandar

In October 2009, she released “Kala Sha Kala“,

A collection of Punjabi Wedding songs in India. In 2012, Laila served as a judge on the show Sur Kshetra,

an Indian television contest show for amateur singers. She described her relationship with fellow judge Asha Bhosle as that of sisters. In 2014, she collaborated with Sabina Yasmin on a song for a television play “Dalchhut Projapoti“, the first time they worked on a song together.
With her brilliant display of combining hard work with natural talent, Runa has taught herself to sing in over 15 different languages. So far the iconic Runa Laila has sung in Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi, Gujarati, Pashto, Baluchi, Arabic, Persian, Malay, Nepalese, Japanese, Italian, Spanish, French and English.

For her inborn charm and innate charisma, Runa Laila has received numerous offers for acting as well. From both India and Pakistan, directors, including the noted Indian actor, producer, director Raj Kapoor, approached the talented diva to grace their scripts. However, Runa has always kept her priorities straight. She has appeared in only one film, the 1995 smash hit Shilpi, that too because it had connections and resemblances to her real life.

Style Icon

An epitome of uniqueness and forever a style icon, Runa Laila hit the then conservative mind-sets of the TV show organizers hard with her fashion and on-stage appearance. The bold diva in her twenties did not hesitate to show up on her own show titled ‘’Bazm E Laila’’ wearing shirt-pants or maxis. For her, it was only a part of being her true self. And no wonder her confidence won over all the criticism and broke the walls of cultural conservatism. Till this day Runa Laila often designs her own clothes. Fashion designing has somewhat been like a hobby for her.

Charity Work

Runa Laila has done a lot of charity work, after an unfortunate death of her sister in 1976 from cancer. She used to organize concerts in Bangladesh in order to raise funds for the unfortunate cancer patients all over the world.
But the height of popularity never got ‘Runa Laila’ over the clouds, for her attention has only and only revolved around her love for music. The benevolent artiste has taken part in countless charity programs, has worked as an ambassador for SAARC and UNAIDS to create awareness against mortal diseases. She has also funded to establish a children’s ward in Dhaka Children’s Hospital for children with cancer.

Guinness Book Of World Records

Runa Laila’s name has been written on the Guinness Book for recording 30 songs within 3 days. In fact, this is not the only record she holds. In 1982, Runa Laila won Golden Disk Award as her album Superuna composed by Bappi Lahiri was sold over 1 lakh copies on the very first day of its release.

Career

Shravan Kumar started his music direction along with Nadeem Akhtar both were known as one of the most successful music directors of Bollywood during 1990s and 2000s.

shravan kumar and nadeem akhtar

Shravan Kumar and Nadeem have the strong reliance of Hindustani music in their compositions and were the only composers during the 1990s and 2000s who relied heavily on three particular instruments the Bansuri, the sitar and the Shehnai in almost all of their songs.

By using these instruments in a modern way without disconnecting them from their original value, their contribution is unique compared to some rising music directors evolving a new music style beginning in the mid-1990s.

The association of Nadeem Saifi Ashfaq and Shravan dates back to 1973 when they met each other at a function. Shravan Kumar and Nadeem’s first film assignment was Dangal, a Bhojpuri movie in 1973 (released in 1975).

Their first Hindi movie assignment was ‘’Maine Jeena Seekh Liya’’in 1981 sung by Amit kumar.

In 1989, Shravan Kumar three big movies were released: Ilaaka, Hisaab Khoon Ka and Lashkar.

In 1985, the duo composed music for a commercial project called Star Ten. Ten Hindi actors (Mithun, Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Sachin, Danny, Vijendra, Sulakshana Pandit, etc.) sang some songs with lyrics by Anwar Saagar.

  • Anil Kapoor, Vajaita Pandit – Bar Bar Telephone
  • Jackie Shroff – Kashmir Se Kaniya Kumar
  • Yunh Dhoop Mein – Danny, Kalapna
  • Kal Bas Ke Intizar – Shailendra Singh
  • Aaj Ki Raat Na Ghar – Vijayndra, Kajal Kiran
  • Disco Ki Bimari Ayee – Sachin & Chorus
  • Angoori Paani Chhad Gaya – Mithun Chakraborty

Shravan Kumar‘s breakthrough soundtrack album was Aashiqui (1990), which sold 20 million units in India (which was the highest selling copies of that era) and became the best-selling Bollywood soundtrack album of all time.

Nadeem – Shravan Kunar were also behind many of the other best-selling Bollywood soundtrack albums of the 1990s. Their success helped establish the music label T-Series.

nadeem and shravan albums

The specialty that the duo possesses is that all of their works have done majorly using three particular Hindustani instruments, namely, the Shehnai, the sitar and the Bansuri. Their songs were sung by many singers but mostly by the Ever Green Trio – Alka Yagnik, Udit Naryan and Kumar Sanu.

Alka Yagnik, Udit Naryan and Kumar Sanu

When Pardes soundtrack was released, the tracks had different varieties of songs “I Love My India” and “Meri Mehbooba”.

Love songs “Do Dil Mil Rahe Hain

Dissolving Career

In 2005, Shravan Kumar and Nadeem decided to part ways. As it is noticed the irony of this duo and the film they had worked last. The Film they had worked last was named “Dosti” and then this iconic duo decided to part their ways as a result it was their last movie together. Nadeem started his own perfume and bag company and was also involved in solo compositions.

Shravan Kumar was uninterested in continuing with his music, and instead focused on the music careers of his sons (Sanjeev–Darshan) and movie production.

Another reason cited is probably the growing distance between the two. In an interview, Nadeem stated that there wasn’t any conflict between him and Shravan.

In late 2013 it was announced that the duo would work together again on the sequel of Deewana but they later split due to personal conflicts again as a result of which Nadeem decided to return as a solo composer for Ishq Forever in 2015.

Comeback of Nadeem(only)

In the year 2016, Nadeem Saifi-Akhtar made his comeback with lyricist Sameer (lyricist) in the film Ishq Forever. He has split with his partner Shravan and worked on the film as a solo composer.

The film features ten songs. In the year 2017 to continue his musical carrier in the film Ek Haseena Thi Ek Deewana Tha as a solo composer and film is produced and directed by Suneel Darshan.

Collaboration

Shravan along with Nadeem has collaborated with many singers for their movies –

  • Kumar Sanu – Aap Ki Yaadein , Jo Pyar Kar Gaye, Teri Mohobbat Mein, Raatein Hain Iqrar ki, Teri Judaai Mein, Yeh Baharein Yeh Nazarein.
  • Anuradha Paudwal – Aap se Acchi Aapki Yaadein Hain, Chahe Dunia, Chahe Toofan, Qayamat Aa Jaye, Pal Din Mahine Kayi Saal Hogaye.
  • Kavita Krishnamurthy – Paas Reh Kar Bhi Koi Paas Na Ho.
  • Alka Yagnik – Tumse Mili Thi College Me, Meri Tamanna Hain Me Amitabh, Hawa Ne Ye Paigham, Khuda Aap Ko Nazar, Pyaar Hua Hain Abhi, Ye Koi Baat Nahi, Aapki Soorat Pe, Tujhko Ghazal Kahoon.
  • Sonu Nigam – Hum The Tum The, Ishq Na Mange, Aye Dil Ye Batein,
  • Sunidhi Chauhan – O Jaane jaan

Awards

Nadeem and Shravan Kumar had won hearts and soul of millions of people of the country with their remarkable music production.

By the theme and type of music they used to produce it was beautiful enough to leave a mark on the critics who are responsible to choose who the awards should be given.

  • Filmfare Best Music Director Award – Aashiqui 1991
  • Filmfare Best Music Director Award – Saajan 1992
  • Filmfare Best Music Director Award – Deewana 1993

Wonderful Happy Birthday Wishes to Singer Usha Uthup.

Usha Uthup

The Legendary Singer Usha Utup who is also regarded as ‘’Didi of Bengal’’ was born in a Tamil family on November 8, 1947 in Bombay state (now Mumbai) she studied at St. Agnes High School, Byculla. When she was in school she was thrown out of music class because she didn’t fit in with a voice like hers. But her music teacher recognized that she had some music in her and would give her clappers or triangles to play.

Even though Usha Uthup was not formally trained in music, she grew up in an atmosphere of music. Her parents used to listen to a wide range from Western classical to Hindustani and Carnatic including Kishori Amonkar and Bade Ghulam Ali Khan on radio and she used to join them. She used to enjoy listening to Radio Ceylon.
Usha Uthup got a kick start from her neighbor was S.M.A. Pathan, who was then the deputy commissioner of police. His daughter, Jamila, influenced Usha Uthup to learn Hindi and take up Indian classical music. This fusion approach helped her to pioneer her unique brand of Indian pop in the 1970s.

Family

Usha Uthup’s father was a policeman, who rose to become Deputy Commissioner of police, Bombay. Her mother, a simple, yet well read, intelligent Indian housewife. Her elder sisters,

lndira and Uma, were the famous singing Sami sisters.
Uma Pocha in a Doctor,
Maya Sami is a Singer too and
Indira Shrivadhanis a travel industry executive.

Usha Uthup is married to Mr Jani Chacko Uthup who is a Businessman in Kolkata.
Usha Uthup was blessed with two children in her life. A daughter and a son.

Daughter’s name is Anjali Uthup who is a radio jockey.
Son’s name is Sunny Uthup who is an event manager who manages various types of events.

Usha Uthup and family is currently residing in Kolkata, West Bengal.

Career

Usha Uthup started singing when she was mere 9 years old and it was a public singing. Usha ji’s sisters who already started to explore their life and experience in the world of music introduced her to Ameen Sayani who was a radio announcer in those days. The radio announcer Ameen Sayani gave Usha Uthup an opportunity to sing in the ‘Ovatline Music Hour Of Radio Ceylon’
She sang a number called “Mocking Bird”.
After this mind blowing singing there were numerous chances for her to sing during her teenage years and days, she got many opportunities.

Usha Uthup started her music career in Chennai in 1969, singing in a small nightclub called Nine Gems in the basement of the erstwhile Safire Theatre complex on Mount Road, wearing a saree and leg calipers.
Her performance was so well received that the owner of the nightclub asked her to stay on for a week.

After her first night club gig, she began singing in Calcutta at night clubs such as “Trincas“. She met her future husband Uthup in Trincas.
At about the same time, she also sang at “Talk of the Town”, now known as “Not Just Jazz by the Bay” in Bombay (now Mumbai). After Trincas, her next engagement took her to Delhi where she sang at the Oberoi hotels. By happenstance, a film crew belonging to Navketan unit and Dev Anand visited the nightclub and they offered her a chance to sing movie playback.
She started her Bollywood career with Ivory- Merchant’s Bombay Talkies in 1970.

In which she sang an English number under Shanker-Jaikishan and then Hare Rama Hare Krishna.

The rhymes reflect the Indian ethos through the Sa-re-ga-ma, mangoes, Indian rivers, the train experiences, Indian festivals, indigenous trees, Cricket, Indian foods like bhelpuri and sambhar, Indian attire like the dhoti, sari, bindi and bangles and even some folk tales. With each rhyme set to an Indian raga, and sung in her characteristic voice with a feisty tempo. Usha creates the atmosphere for children and, surprisingly, even adults to sing along and dance to the toe-tapping beats. She is a stage performer and gave performances all over the world. And is known for her lively stage presence.

She recorded her first album with Luis Banks for which she was paid Rs. 3500.
